What can I get involved in?

There are many opportunities for you to help in the enrichment of church life and your personal life by joining one or more ministries that interest you.

Lay Readers

Lay Readers are parishioners who, after training, are licensed by the Bishop to carry out various duties to assist the Priest in conducting services.

Chalice Bearers

Chalice bearers are parishioners who have been chosen to support the clergy, having been licensed by the Bishop, in administering the wine to members of the congregation during the celebration of the Eucharist.

Acolytes

Acolytes assist in the Worship Service by lighting candles, carrying the processional cross, and assisting the Deacon or Priest in the set up and clean up at the altar.

Intercessors and Readers

Intercessors are lay people of the church who share, with the Deacon, the ministry of leading the Prayers of the People.

Readers take part in the service by reading the 1st and 2nd lessons from the bible.

Choir

Our Choir is a 4 section choir singing at all 10:00 am services from September to June and other special services during the year or, when requested, at funerals or other services. Lend your voice and lift up a holy praise unto the Lord with us.

Chancel Guild

This group is responsible for setting up the church for Sunday services, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. Each of the teams is responsible for one week per month, Thursday through Wednesday, for all events. The on duty team meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday to receive the flowers and prepare the altar for the Sunday 8:30 a.m. service, ensure that everything is clean and tidy and polish brass as needed. After the Sunday 8:30 a.m. service, members wash the silver and re-set the altar for the 10:00 a.m. service. After that service all the vessels are cleaned and put away, and the altar flowers are bagged for delivery to shut-ins or hospital patients.

Sidespersons

Christ Church has 6 teams of Sidespersons. The team on duty each Sunday is responsible for greeting all those entering the church, handing out Prayer Books and leaflets, showing visitors to the pews, helping those needing to use the elevator or the chair lift, taking up the offertory and aiding in the counting of monies received.

Pastoral Care

The Pastoral Care Group is comprised of 4 teams of lay people (licensed by the Bishop) who make regular visits to shut-in members of the congregation taking them communion and otherwise maintaining regular phone contact. Each team is assigned two people to visit. The Clergy visit two retirement homes and a long term care facility on a regular basis to offer a Communion Service.

When notified, the clergy or the relevant lay pastoral team visit members in hospital. Clergy also visit in emergencies such as death or serious illness in the family.

Property and Maintenance

The Property Maintenance Committee looks after the general maintenance & repair of the church, and the supervision of major repairs, renovations & improvements done by specialized trades people, approved by the Wardens.

Communications Group

Christ Church Scarborough is a very active church which welcomes volunteers who have a desire to spread the good news of our many services, programs & ministries, with the congregation and the community at large. If you are interested in social media, publishing a newsletter or handbook, managing a website or recording, your skills would really be appreciated.

Sunday School

Sunday school with more than 20 children in full swing is a lively and bustling environment filled with energy and enthusiasm. The classroom is abuzz with laughter, chatter, and the occasional squeal of excitement. As the dedicated teachers engage the children in interactive lessons, the room becomes a dynamic space for learning and exploration.

Groups of children gather around tables, eagerly participating in various activities such as storytelling, crafts, and games that are designed to reinforce important lessons from the Bible. The atmosphere is vibrant, with colorful materials strewn across the room and walls adorned with posters depicting biblical stories and verses.

Amidst the organized chaos, the teachers skillfully manage the diverse needs and personalities of the children, ensuring that each child feels included and valued. They use creative teaching methods to capture the children’s attention and make the lessons both meaningful and enjoyable.

As the morning progresses, the children eagerly share their thoughts and insights, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among them. Through songs, prayers, and discussions, they deepen their understanding of faith and morality while forming lasting friendships with their peers.
